Cut flowers are a living, natural, and delicate product, so their beauty greatly depends on how they are cared for after delivery. Even the most beautiful bouquet will not last long if left in dirty water, in a place that is too warm, or with untrimmed stems. On the other hand, a few simple but important steps can significantly extend the freshness of your flowers and help maintain their aesthetic appearance for longer.
After receiving a bouquet or cut flowers, it is recommended not to leave them without water for long. The sooner the flowers receive moisture, the easier they will recover after transportation. If the bouquet is wrapped, carefully unwrap it or at least loosen the stem area.
Before placing flowers in a vase, it must be washed. Even if it looks clean at first glance, it may contain residual bacteria that quickly deteriorate water quality. A clean vase is one of the most important things if you want your flowers to stay beautiful for as long as possible.
Use clean, room-temperature water for your flowers. It is recommended to change it every 1–2 days. When changing the water, it is also worth rinsing the vase itself. If the water becomes cloudy earlier, it should be replaced immediately.
Before placing flowers in a vase, it is recommended to trim the stems at an angle, approximately 45 degrees. This increases the water absorption area. It is advisable to repeat this every 1–2 days when changing the water. Use a sharp knife or secateurs. It is important not to crush the stems, as this makes it harder for water to reach the flower.
Leaves left in water begin to decompose and promote bacterial growth. This causes the water to spoil faster and the flowers to last shorter. Therefore, all leaves that would be submerged in water should be removed.
Cut flowers are best kept in a bright but not sunny spot. Direct sunlight, radiators, heaters, or other heat sources can significantly shorten their lifespan.
Fruits release ethylene — natural gases that accelerate flower wilting. For this reason, bouquets should not be kept near fruit bowls or in kitchen areas where fruits are stored constantly.
If some flowers begin to wilt faster than others, it is worth removing them. This way, the rest of the bouquet will look tidier and maintain its aesthetic appearance for longer.
Different types of flowers bloom and last differently. Some last longer, others shorter, so it is natural that the bouquet changes over time. This is not a defect — it is a characteristic of a living product.
